Why Melbourne's weather is brutal on car paint

Melbourne's climate is notoriously unpredictable — four seasons in one day is a cliché for a reason. But what most car owners don't realise is just how aggressively that climate attacks their paint. Between the intense UV in summer, the bird-heavy parks and leafy streets, and the temperature swings that expand and contract every surface on your car, Melbourne is one of the toughest environments in Australia for paint longevity.

Here's a breakdown of the main threats, and what actually works to defend against them.

UV damage: the silent killer

Australia has some of the strongest UV radiation in the world — and Melbourne is no exception, especially from October through March. UV breaks down the clear coat on your car over time, causing it to oxidise and fade. Once oxidation sets in, the paint looks chalky and dull, and no amount of washing will reverse it. Prevention is everything here.

The best protection is a high-quality carnauba wax or synthetic paint sealant applied every 3–4 months. For long-term protection, a ceramic coating creates a hard, UV-resistant layer that bonds to the paint and lasts 2–5 years.

Bird droppings: surprisingly acidic
