How often should you detail your car?

We hear it all the time: "I'll get it detailed when it gets bad enough." The problem? By the time your car looks bad, the damage is already done. Contaminants like bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime don't just sit on the surface — they etch into your clear coat over hours and days.

Here's the detailing schedule we recommend to Melbourne drivers who actually want to protect their car's finish and resale value.

Every 1–2 weeks: Quick wash

A regular hand wash removes surface dust, road grime, and loose contaminants before they bond to the paint. This doesn't need to be a full detail — a proper two-bucket wash with a quality car shampoo is enough. Skip the drive-through automatic car wash; the brushes are almost always dirty and scratch your clear coat over time.

Every 3–4 months: Full interior + exterior detail

A quarterly full detail (like our Signature Detail) covers everything a basic wash misses:

• Clay bar treatment to remove embedded contaminants
• Machine polish to remove light swirl marks and oxidation
• Paint sealant or wax application for protection
• Deep interior vacuum, steam clean, and leather conditioning
• Glass treatment inside and out

This is the most important service for maintaining your paint's condition and the car's resale value.

Every 12–18 months: Paint decontamination + sealant top-up

Even with regular washes, iron particles from brake dust and industrial fallout slowly embed in your paint. An annual iron decontamination treatment followed by a fresh coat of paint sealant resets your protection and keeps the finish deep and glossy.

Immediately: After bird droppings, tree sap, or fuel spills

These three are in a category of their own. Bird droppings are highly acidic — they can etch into clear coat in as little as 20 minutes on a hot Melbourne day. Tree sap hardens in heat and becomes extremely difficult to remove without damaging the paint. Fuel spills strip wax and sealant on contact.

Don't wait for your next scheduled detail. Keep a spray detailer and microfibre cloth in your car for emergencies, and deal with these as soon as you see them.

What happens if you skip details?

Over time, neglected paint develops:

• Swirl marks and fine scratches (from improper washing)
• Oxidation — the chalky, faded look on older cars
• Embedded contaminants that can only be removed with a clay bar or polish
• Water spots that etch into the clear coat if left too long

All of this reduces your car's resale value. A well-maintained car can fetch $1,000–$3,000 more at trade-in time — a strong return on a few details per year.
